Species Orangutans

Orangutans are endemic animals from the island of Borneo, where only in Indonesia there are orangutans, namely in Borneo. There are three species of orangutan, namely the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) in Kalimantan and Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) in Sumatra, and the Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis) which was only discovered in 2017 in South Tapanuli, North Sumatra. But now the orangutan population is decreasing and is classified as endangered. The main causes of the threat to the orangutan population are deforestation and habitat destruction, which mostly occur due to forest conversion for oil palm plantations or for other agricultural lands. All orangutan species are listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Orangutans are protected by national and international laws, but laws and regulations alone have not been effective in protecting this extraordinary species.
